On the day of the UK General Election in May 2005, broadcasters were able to predict the Labour majority of 66 seats, even before any votes had been counted.? In this talk some of the statistical methods behind that prediction will be described.
Biography
David Firth works on statistical theory, methods and computation, and applications especially in the social sciences.? After his PhD in London he held positions at the University of Texas at Austin and at the Universities of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 and Oxford, before moving to Warwick in 2003.?
He is co-director of the EPSRC Academy for PhD Training in Statistics, and a member of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods.? He has edited the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society series B, chaired the Research Section of the Royal Statistical Society, and served on the ESRC Research Grants Board and the National Statistics Methodology Advisory Committee.? In 2008 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy.
