All colleagues are invited to submit nominations for the award of an Honorary Degree or Fellow of the University to be received at our 2026 graduation ceremonies.

Please submit your proposals to the Honorary Degree Advisory Group secretary, Kelly Reid Smith (gov@soton.ac.uk), by 15 April 2025, using the forms available on the Honorary Degree Nominations SharePoint site, and attaching a one-page CV for the nominee.

Applications will be sent to the appropriate Faculty for endorsement, before consideration by the Honorary Degree Advisory Group.? The Vice-Chancellor will then present the recommendations of the Honorary Degree Advisory Group to Senate and to Council for approval.

When making recommendations to Senate and Council, the Honorary Degree Advisory Group will consider a number of factors, which you can read on the SharePoint site.

• We positively encourage nominations for people from under-represented communities, including women.
• Members of the University should feel free to seek views about possible nominations from their colleagues. However, please ensure that complete confidentiality is observed: in no circumstances should a person nominated be informed that their name has been put forward.
• Nominators are encouraged to contact the Office of Development & Alumni Relations (ODAR) before submission (alumni@soton.ac.uk).?The ODAR team maintain active relationships with our alumni community and external stakeholders and may be able to offer additional information to support the nomination.
• Awards can be made to past professors, but based on continuing national activities, rather than solely on past contributions to the University. Honorary degrees will not normally be conferred on serving members of staff, however distinguished, nor on serving politicians, except where the nomination is in respect of achievements outside the nominee’s political activities.
• Nominators are asked to consider that they have the time commitment required for hosting the nominee and presenting them for conferment of their award (including writing and delivering a short oration). Should your nomination be successful, you will be supported throughout the graduation process.
