Wi-Fi First
Some of the benefits of a primarily wireless network (known as “Wi-Fi First”) include:
- Fast and reliable connectivity, free from outages and interruption.
- High-performance Wi-Fi in lecture theatres and seminar rooms, which allows us to deliver more innovative digital learning experiences.
- Seamless connectivity across our campuses, including teaching spaces, social areas, labs, offices and outdoor zones, giving students and staff the flexibility to work from whichever space suits them.
- Reduced support and energy costs, supporting sustainability.
- Easier to scale up coverage as requirements grow and change.
You can find out more about the many other benefits of the upgraded network on the Network Refresh Sharepoint.
Wireless workplace
In our staff office spaces, we will also mainly be using Wi-Fi to support our work.
We recognise that there may be some instances where a wired connection is still needed, and you will have the opportunity to share this with us as we prepare for each building upgrade.
We are also aware that labs, workshops and other specialist spaces will have special requirements too, and we will be ensuring we capture these carefully.
Capturing your requirements
Over the next few weeks and months, you can expect to see people in and around university buildings conducting surveys and other information gathering activities. Thank you for your support while we carry out these visits, which will help to ensure the network upgrade goes smoothly and everyone’s needs are met.
The first phase of buildings will be upgraded to the new network from this summer. The upgrades will take place gradually over the next two years, and we will be in touch when it is time to upgrade your building.
