Module overview

This module examines the foreign, occupation and racial policies of the Nazi regime, along with experiences on the Home Front during the Second World War, resistance and the collapse of the regime.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

the key historiographical debates that have centred on the history of National Socialism and the range of sources scholars use to interpret this history
the impact of National Socialism on occupied Europe, and particularly on its Jewish populations, between 1933 and 1945
The origins and development of National Socialist rule in Germany between 1933 and 1945

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

utilise and develop your time-management skills
research and communicate your findings convincingly and concisely in written reports
locate and use effectively textual, visual and material culture sources in the library and on-line

actively engage with the secondary literature on the history of National Socialism, its history and its interpretation
analyse a variety of primary sources relating to the emergence of National Socialism, its history, and its interpretation
understand and critically evaluate the different ways in which the period of National Socialism continues to resonate through the contemporary world

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching methods include primarily, two double sessions per week in seminar format with a variety of tutorial input close analysis of a variety of primary sources and scholarly literature Learning activities include presentations by course members and their discussion by the group plenary discussions chaired by the tutor and members of the seminar group.
