The deadline for academic applications is Thursday 26th March 2026.
All eligible offer holders/applicants will be automatically considered for the studentships.
Applications will be assessed on the quality of the research proposal, the candidate's suitability for doctoral research, and the fit with the supervisory team and wider research environment.

Applications for the AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards will undergo the following selection stages:
?
1.? Academic: Undertaken in departments
?
These consider the following criteria that apply to all applications for PhD study within the Faculty and respond to the core element of what a PhD is, and the applicants potential to complete the study in 3.5 years (or 7 years part-time).? These core elements are based on your research proposal, any written work or portfolio work you have submitted, and academic and/or professional experience you will bring to the PhD programme, and your knowledge of the department in which you will be working and it's research profile.? Core elements address:
?
a) The originality of your research proposal.? A PhD must offer original research
b) The contribution to knowledge in your discipline/s of your project.? The originality of the project has to make a contribution to discussions in your field.? These can offer new ways of seeing, understanding or doing, or approaching the topic and or drive discourse onwards.
c) The potential for completion in the timeframe of the award.? It is important that you consider your research project in a specific timeframe as outlined.? This is a University requirement.
d) Your expectations and understandings of the PhD, e.g. time management, dealing with change etc
e) Whether this topic fits into research within the department.? This is important so we can allocate the best supervisory team available to support you.? Please do use the University of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 Faculty and Departmental Research webpages to where your research fits.

These elements will be discussed with you at an interview undertaken with subject specialists, who may or may not become your supervisory team.

Departments will forward their top 3 candidates for the second stage.

2.? Personal skills and competencies: Undertaken by a specialist, Faculty level panel including EDI specialists.?

This second stage develops from the first, by considering your responses to the questions listed on the additional information MS form completed in addition to the University of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 application form.? These are:
?
a) What motivated you to do a PhD? This question asks you to discuss your drive, your commitment and investment into the programme and the work involved.
b) What excites you about your PhD topic? This question encourages you to think about and discuss the complex ideas that inform your research proposal and challenge existing theories and knowledge in the context of your topic.
c) Please describe your skill and background that are relevant to the PhD you are applying for.? This question encourages you to highlight your experiences - education, work, lived - that will inform and support your application for study at PhD level.
d) Please describe how your PhD will support your future goals/career aspirations.? This question enables you to think about the impact of your PhD.? This could be about your post PhD future, but the question also offers you the opportunity to consider what you would your PhD to achieve more widely, e.g. to your discpline, policy, communities, the wider world.
