Professor Shearman qualified from Guys Hospital Medical School London University and trained in vascular surgery in Birmingham. He was appointed as a senior lecturer/consultant vascular surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in 1990. In 1994 he moved to BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 as a NHS Consultant Vascular Surgeon and in 1999 was appointed to the Chair of Vascular Surgery at the University of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载.

Professor Shearman is vascular surgeon in a busy vascular unit which undertakes most vascular and endovascular treatments of arterial and venous disease. The unit serves a local population of 900,000 people. His research program is largely directed at determining factors that promote the progression of vascular disease, particularly in diabetes. These include environmental, genetic and haemodynamic factors, and how they might be modified to improve clinical outcomes.

Professor Shearman is Associate Medical Director for R and D in BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 University Hospitals NHS Trust. He was on the Council and Chairman of the Training and Education Committee of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and President of the Society (2009-10). He was appointed head of the Wessex Post Graduate School of Surgery in 2007.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a powerful marker of cardiovascular risk The PAD Research Group has a track record of investigating factors determining the development and progression of arterial disease including nutritional, inherited and haemodynamic factors. In particular the group have examined the potential benefits of omega 3 fatty acids on atherosclerotic plaques and vascular endothelial function. The group has held grants form Ministry of food and fisheries (now DEFRA; ?298,000, 2001) and Biotechnology and Biology and Science (?446,611; 2006) to examine the effect of national supplements on endothelial health and disease progression. Further work in this area was supported by Pronova (?300,000; 2008).

People with diabetes are particularly susceptible to develop PAD and it is a major cause of amputation in this group. We devised a new method of service delivery which resulted in a 60% reduction in amputation and cost savings of ?1.3 million over 3 years.

Working with engineers we have modeled parts of the vascular system and used these models to predict the outcomes of therapeutic interventions. This work supported 2 successful PhD programs.

Current work includes identification of epigenetic markers of vascular disease and remote monitoring of the early indicators of skin damage in the feet of patients with diabetes, a risk factor for subsequent amputation.
